Sulzbacher kids’ paintings of ‘dream homes’ to boost fundraiser for homeless center

The kids’ assignment was to draw their dream home in a holiday setting.

The home that would make them feel safe. The home where they would like their family to live, where they would like to grow up.

The home that maybe, just maybe would become reality in their future, after their stays at the Sulzbacher Center for the homeless ended.

And the home that would grace the cover of the center’s annual Christmas card fundraiser.

On Thursday, that honor went to Keiara, 16, who began to cry when her name was called. She was excited to win, she said, but sad her mother missed the event because she had to work.

“It was good, I just wish my mom was here,” she said.

Her painting was full of bright colors, with pink sky, falling snow, blue house, gray roof, wreaths on the doors, holiday lights, candy cane and ribbon decorations and a smiling snowman and red-nosed reindeer in the snow-covered yard.

“One day I want my house to look just like that,” Keiara said.

Despite her artistic gift, she has other career plans.

“It’s just one of my talents,” she said.
