Los Angeles

There is a little-known side to world-famous LA. For example, you can visit the Page Museum at La Brea Tar Pits and see all the ice-age fossils found there. Alternatively, take in some of the many free attractions in the Downtown district. Visit the Public Library (630 W 5th Street), built in the 1930s, to appreciate its fabulous architecture; go to City Hall (201 Main Street) and climb up to the Observation Deck (where you need ID); finally, wander around the original Mexican settlement (Olvera Street).

Then get a one- or three-day pass on public transport and visit charming Pasadena, a haven of old-world charm. Take an overhead train from Union Station (Art Deco meets hacienda) and see the dried-up river beds used in films such as Grease as a setting for car chases. Finally, hop on the bus to Santa Monica and pass all the smart neighbourhoods on the way before arriving at the end of Route 66 near Santa Monica pier.
