Astoria is a beauty contestant

Astoria was one of 10 Northwest cities named as a finalist in the Paint Quality Institute’s (PQI) “Prettiest Painted Places in America” contest.

This is the third contest PQI has held since the 1990s. Two of the 10 regional finalists will be named the prettiest painted places in the Northwest and join the winners from five other regions as the 12 “Prettiest Painted Places in America.”

Debbie Zimmer, a paint and color expert with PQI described a “prettiest painted place” as a special town or neighborhood with exceptional community-wide “curb appeal” due to visually pleasing or creative use of exterior paint color.

“One typically thinks of curb appeal defined by beautiful color schemes on homes or buildings, and that’s the case most of the time, but exquisite outdoor murals and creative use of paint color on statues, signage, traffic signals, water towers, and even streets and sidewalks have elevated the appearance of many of today’s prettiest communities,” she said.

The 10 Northwest finalists are: Albany, Ore.; Astoria, Ore.; Butte, Mont.; Edmonds, Wash.; Eureka, Calif.; The Victorian Village of Ferndale, Calif.; Northwest Crossing, Ore.; Port Townsend, Wash.; Vashon-Maury Island, Wash.; and Wallace, Idaho.
